Community Service 2008 Company of the Week

As a company, The PNC Financial Services Group understands that the long-term vitality of the communities where it does business is both a solemn responsibility and good business sense. To assist with that commitment, PNC employees from the Philadelphia/Southern New Jersey market conducted their most successful Preschool Supply Drive to date by collecting more than 30,000 new preschool supplies in September.

The items were collected in support of PNC “Grow Up Great” initiative, a 10-year, $100 million investment to help prepare children from birth to age five - with a focus on underserved children - for success in school and life.  During the two week collection event, 160 bins and boxes of supplies were gathered by all lines of business, departments and regions. Every employee who made a donation was credited with one PNC “Grow Up Great” volunteer hour. More than 1,100 volunteer hours were logged.

At the conclusion of the drive, the supplies were sorted and organized at a United Way Day of Caring event at the Eastwick, PA Operations Center on Sept. 10.

Forty-five employee volunteers moved, sorted, counted and organized the supplies. Deliveries were then made to three “Grow Up Great” partner centers: Burlington County (NJ) Head Start, North Philadelphia Head Start and Children’s Village Childcare Center (PA). Additional deliveries will be made to two other centers in the coming weeks.

The teachers and children from the centers expressed gratitude for the supplies and the generosity of PNC employees. Mary Graham, director of Children’s Village, said “the smiles and squeals from the children said it all as they peeked into the clear containers and saw notebooks, art supplies, colored papers and so much more."
