Capital One invests in financial literacy through award-winning national programs that provide important money management skills for students of all ages. Through partnerships with organizations such as Consumer Action and Junior Achievement Worldwide, thousands of Capital One associates have volunteered to deliver financial education training in community-based settings including schools, non-profit partner facilities and mobile learning labs. In 2008 alone, nearly 1,700 Capital One volunteers taught financial education to more than 75,000 youth and adults in the communities Capital One serves.
This April, during National Financial Literacy Month, Capital One volunteers embraced exciting new opportunities to teach financial skills and raise awareness of the importance of financial health. Highlights of these efforts include:
- In Austin, Texas, Capital One volunteers partnered with Financial Fitness of Greater Austin to host a $mart Kid essay contest, youth-based financial literacy trainings and adult home-ownership seminars taught in both Spanish and English for local residents.
-
In Long Island, New York, volunteers taught middle-grade students using a mobile, interactive financial literacy lab called Capital One/Junior Achievement Finance Park. Students were transformed into ‘adults for a day’ and learned the basics of budgeting, money management, and using credit wisely. In 2009, the interactive program will visit twelve Capital One communities across the U.S., impacting an estimated 20,000 youth. Visit www.financeparkonline.com to learn more.
-
In Lake Charles, Louisiana, Capital One brought KidzBANK, an interactive banking experience, to Ralph Wilson Elementary School. The program allows students to open an account, post payments and track savings growth.
-
In Richmond, Virginia, volunteers taught MoneyWi$e Banking Basics to clients served by The Daily Planet, an organization that empowers the homeless to obtain education, job training and employment. MoneyWi$e is a national financial literacy partnership of Consumer Action and Capital One (www.money-wise.org.)
