Community Service 2008 Company of the Week

December 8, 2008

BB&T Corporation

A large part of BB&T’s mission is helping to make the communities where we work better places to live. Habitat for Humanity shares that mission and was a perfect partner with a great project this year for BB&T and the Financial Services Roundtable Community Service program.

BB&T contributed $7,500 to the project, and more than 75 BB&T employees and other volunteers worked three days to renovate the Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity’s Home Store. The Home Store accepts donations of household items such as furniture, appliances, hardware and construction materials and sells them to help pay the administrative costs of Habitat for Humanity.

The work took place during scorching August days of high humidity and temperatures in the mid-90s. Employees tore out walls, rebuilt display racks, and built a shed to house a fork lift. But they first had to clear away merchandise and trim an overgrowth of trees and shrubs where the shed was to be built.

In addition to the Cape Fear Habitat project, more than 200 BB&T employees in nine cities participated in a variety of projects. They sponsored a financial literacy campaign at the Randolph County (N.C.) Housing Fair and at seven BB&T financial centers in western Kentucky. And they supported a local food bank in Virginia with donations of more than 3,900 pounds of food and more than 500 volunteer hours.

Congratulations, BB&T!
