Barclays Capital Volunteers in Brooklyn

Barclays Capital is committed to investing in the community and providing a range of programs to encourage and support employees’ philanthropic efforts. In 2009, more than 750 employees in the Americas spent over 5,000 hours taking part in volunteer activities and 90 employees participated in charity runs, walks and cycling events, underscoring our commitment to local communities and the depth of our charitable partnerships.
As a part of that commitment to our local community, over 475 Barclays Capital employees partnered with The Financial Services Roundtable and Partnerships for Parks in two events last month to revitalize four parks in New York City.
At the volunteer opportunity on July 3, the day started with an opening ceremony and welcome remarks from Al Wilshire, Chief of Staff for Congressman Edolphus Towns (D-NY). He was joined by Rich Whiting, Executive Director and General Counsel for The Financial Services Roundtable, Leah Worrell, Volunteer Project Manager for Partnerships for Parks and executives from Barclays Capital. 350 summer analysts and associates then began planting flowers and shrubs and painting floor games and equipment at three separate parks.
At Sperandeo Brothers Playground, volunteers added fresh coats of paint to playground equipment and worked together to add new stone borders around the park's trees. Over half a dozen line games were repainted on the outdoor courts to improve the sports space the playground shares with Rafael Cordero High School. Planting and cleanup were the focus at nearby City Line and Linden Parks with new flowers and saplings planted, and existing trees given new mulch and woodchips to prevent weed growth.
On July 9, an additional 125 infrastructure analysts rolled up their sleeves to paint six full basketball courts through the same initiative at Sunset Park.
“At Barclays, we have a global philanthropic initiative with a very clear message: ‘Look After Local Communities’. Our employees continually invest time in the neighborhoods where we operate,” said Gerard LaRocca, Chief Administrative Officer, Americas, at Barclays Capital, the investment banking division of Barclays Bank PLC. “This is our third year participating in this program, which serves to strengthen our brand. We are very proud of our employees’ volunteer work in New York City.”
