Assurant Employees Supported 7 Habitat for Humanity Builds During 2009
Employees of Assurant’s Atlanta-based businesses – Assurant Solutions and Assurant Specialty Property – spent a busy build season with Habitat for Humanity in 2009, swinging hammers, installing drywall, painting, laying sod, etc. in seven communities across the U.S. and Canada. A total of 500 Assurant employees worked on the builds, which were supported through $158,000 in grants from the Assurant Solutions/Assurant Specialty Property charitable contributions program.
“A Habitat build is one of those rare volunteer experiences where at the end of the day you can really see how you helped make a difference in your community and the life of a family who needs affordable housing,” said Craig Lemasters, president and CEO of Assurant Solutions.
In the Atlanta metro area, Assurant joined with two Habitat for Humanity affiliates to build homes. In July and August a total of 139 company volunteers from the Assurant Solutions/Assurant Specialty Property executive offices spent five days building the company’s eighth home with Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Metro Atlanta. In 2008 Assurant pledged $250,000 to the Habitat affiliate’s four-year initiative to build 100 homes in three Atlanta metro counties.
In nearby Duluth, Ga., where Assurant Specialty Property operates two hazard insurance service centers, Assurant co-sponsored a townhouse build with Gwinnett County Habitat for Humanity. In October a total of 85 Assurant volunteers worked four days on this build.
Assurant Solutions and Assurant Specialty Property also have a long history with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Miami. In February 140 employees joined a blitz build that produced Assurant’s eighth sponsored home with the South Florida Habitat affiliate.
Other builds supported by Assurant Solutions and Assurant Specialty Property employees in 2009:
- Rapid City, S.D. Twenty-nine employees volunteered on two days during a build managed by Black Hill Habitat for Humanity. This build was a first for employees who work at the Assurant Solutions preneed insurance service center in Rapid City.
- Yorba Linda, Calif. Twenty employees from Assurant Specialty Property’s insurance service center in Santa Ana and Tustin worked two days on this build.
- Norristown, Pa. Twenty-one employees from the Assurant Wireless Solutions office in Wayne, Pa., participated in two builds over three days during September and October.
- Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Kingston & Frontenac Habitat for Humanity honored employees at the Assurant Solutions operations center in Kingston in October for their support of organization’s 2009 build for their volunteer time and fundraising activities.
Assurant encourages employees to get involved in their communities by provided them up to eight hours of paid time off each year to work as a volunteer for organizations like Habitat for Humanity.
